Introduction
Wellbeing and learning are interconnected, where learning new things can improve wellbeing, and good wellbeing supports effective learning. Learning can boost confidence, provide a sense of achievement, and challenge the mind, while positive mental health and emotional well-being are essential for students to learn effectively, cope with daily challenges, and develop into resilient individuals
“Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”
1 in 6 children aged between 5 and 16 have experienced difficulties with their mental health. (NHS Oct 2020 report)
Schools have an important role to play in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of their pupils.
How our school supports all children with their mental health and wellbeing:
- We teach the children to recognise and talk about their emotions.
- We help children in managing their emotions and recognising when they need support.
- We teach children about self-care techniques, including the importance of rest, spending time with friends and family and the benefits of hobbies and interests.
- We ensure that children know who they can talk to within school if they are worried about their own or someone else’s mental wellbeing.
- Our strong Rights Respecting Schools Ethos promotes empathy, kindness and respect for diversity and difference.
- Messages around children’s mental health are explored and communicated through assemblies and newsletters.
- Staff are trained to notice children who may need extra support. This is arranged in collaboration with our SENDCO, Learning Mentor, Senior Mental Health Lead, class teachers and teaching assistants.
We teach children about their emotions using “Zones of Regulation”.
Signs your child might need extra support with their mental health or wellbeing:
- significant changes in behaviour
- ongoing difficulty sleeping
- withdrawing from social situations
- not wanting to do things they usually like
- self-harm or neglecting themselves
Supporting your child with their mental health:
- Be there to listen. Encourage them to talk to you about their worries.
- Take what they say seriously.
- Show an interest in their life to show you value them.
- Build positive routines.
- Encourage them to be active or creative.
- Support them when things are difficult.
If you are still worried and want support please speak to a member of school staff, or contact your GP.
